inWhat was the Cold War?
The Cold War was an undeclared war of military, economic, and political tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union
When does the Cold War Begin? What are the dates when the ‘origin’ period occurred?
The Cold War started immediately following the conclusion of WWII to 1947 when both the United States and the Soviet Union attempted to implement specific economic and plans in the process of rebuilding Europe.
What things did the United States do that alarmed the Soviet Union?
The fact that the United States was the sole owner of nuclear power and they refused to share the technology with the Soviets. We attempted to control as much territory as possible implementing capitalist governments. Along with he transformation of foreign policy that occurred after the death of FDR and the inauguration of Truman.

inTruman Address on Korea
July 19, 1950
The message sent on July 19th, 1950 by President Truman was to inform the citizens of the United States on the implications and goals pertaining to the military conflict taking place in the Republic of Korea. Truman made it evidently clear that the repercussions of the unprovoked communist invasion of Korea had far reaching consequences that would harm the people of the United States and in free democratic countries around the world. Leaders of the communist world invaded Korea and the policy of the United Nations must be to meet force with force. “These actions by the United Nations and its members are of great importance. The free nations have now made it clear the lawless aggression will be met with force”. The age of negotiating with the communist leaders of the world was now over when Truman stated “That lesson is that aggression must be met firmly. Appeasement leads only to further aggression and ultimately to war”. The President then addressed the ongoing conflict with the Soviet Union detailing the attempts made by the United Nations to peacefully negotiate with Soviet Leaders. The stance of the United States was to support the United Nations and the ultimate goal of everlasting world peace. The communist leaders, primarily the Soviet Union, would not engage and would not participate in this ultimate goal. This would be a long hard fight but in the end it was time to push back the Soviet invaders and consequently fight the world of communism head on. Talking was over; the time to act was now.

Above is a copy of the speech Harry Truman gave on April 11, 1951, to address the issue that was evident in Korea and just what America was trying to do there. To start off his speech President Truman states that “In the simplest terms, what we are doing in Korea is this; We are trying to prevent a third world war”. This gets right to the point and shows the public that he is not playing around with Korea and that America means business while they are over there. He continues on and shows that he believes that most Americans realized that fact last June and also believes that it is “right” for the US to be in Korea and it has been that way since June. This shows confidence in his decision to place troops in Europe and also shows Americans that he believes we are doing good by being in Korea which could help persuade people to believe in his decision. To wrap up his speech he explains his decision to relieve MacArthur from his duties and admits it was very tough for him to do this because of how vital he was to the military. This was a common question among Americans as many people supported MacArthur and looked at him as a military hero being removed from the military.

inThe Soviet Union efficiently used propaganda to convey the message of the U.S. as a hypocrite and corrupt state. Europe was already unsure of capitalist ideas and the ideology was not as dominant and desired as before the 1930’s and the great depression. Both propaganda posters are from the Soviet Union and point out the hypocrisy of the U.S. as a nation seeking peace, when it has just developed nuclear weapons. The first poster is of Uncle Sam sitting in a ring of nuclear bomb switches with a loudspeaker saying that the “Soviet Union offers to stop nuclear weapon test”. The message is that the Soviet Union is being forced to continue the research on nuclear weapons in order to create a balance of power. As long as the U.S. has the bomb, the Soviet Union can never be safe. The second poster of Uncle Sam walking on two atomic bombs on “the road to peace” shows the same discontentment and contingency of the Soviets. Through what means was the U.S. going to establish world peace? According to the Soviet Union the U.S. were not seeking peace, but rather world control and to accomplish this they had their atomic weapons.

inThis document is from April 2, 1948 regarding the US position in Korea. Put simply this document goes to show the official goals of the United States in Korea in the years leading up to the war, primarily to establish a democratic home-rule for the Koreans in the aftermath of WWII and to promote their economic success. Very interesting is the fact that one of the recurring points of the document is that the US should remove its troops from Korea due to its low strategic value and high liability. The national Security Council recommends a quick yet orderly withdrawal of troops while diplomatically attempting to ensure the sovereignty of Korea against the soviets. This is very interesting especially in light of the fact that two years later we we’re involved in a war due to our involvement in Korea. Should the advice of this article have been followed the US may have not been involved in the Korean war although this would also imply that the South Koreans would have undoubtedly lost the hypothetical war. World history could have been drastically changed if these warnings had been heard.
